Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder
Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) is a condition diagnosed in children and adolescents characterized by chronic, severe irritability and frequent, intense temper outbursts that are disproportionate to the situation. Between outbursts, the child maintains a persistently irritable or angry mood most of the day. This diagnosis was introduced to address concerns about overdiagnosis of bipolar disorder in children.

- Severe, recurrent temper outbursts (verbal or physical)
- Outbursts grossly out of proportion to the situation
- Outbursts occur three or more times per week
- Persistently irritable or angry mood between outbursts
- Symptoms present for 12+ months in at least two settings

- Differences in brain function related to emotion regulation
- Family history of mood disorders
- Childhood adversity or trauma

- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Parent training in behavior management
- Stimulant or antidepressant medication when needed
